Health & safety

Great food. Great events.

ExCeL London Hospitality is committed to the highest standards of health and safety and food hygiene and we’re proud of our achievements in this field. We have clear policies in place to reduce risk across the business, and we constantly train our staff so they are knowledgeable on the most up-to-date guidelines.

Managing heath and safety

At ExCeL London Hospitality we have a dedicated HSE team and manager, who are responsible for day-to-day health and safety, food safety and environmental management. The HSE department also operates a 24/7 out-of-hours service to give expert advice and assist in the case of an emergency. No matter the time of day, we have a central team ready to help deal with any issues or queries that may arise.

Our HSE measures covering all anticipated areas and aspects of our operation, keeping our people safe include:

  • Our Compliance Audit assesses health and safety, environmental practices, training and legislation. We are also subject to periodic external audits of our system from ISOQAR our external audit partners.

  • Risk assessments are implemented for all tasks at the mobilisation stage and then reviewed annually as a minimum. Our health and safety manuals include a full list of risk assessments that are signed off by the site management.

  • As a caterer we have a legal and moral responsibility towards food safety.

Our Food Safety Management System (FSMS) is managed in partnership with Luton Borough Council Environmental Health Department, who provide regulatory advice and guidance around our food safety policies and procedures.

The FSMS file contains all of the relevant documentation for ensuring Food Safety standards are met and understood.

  • To achieve the highest possible standards of commitment and compliance to Health, Safety, Hygiene and Environmental practices, we operate to ISO Standards, achieving and maintaining ISO:9001 for Quality Management, IS):14001 for Environmental Management and ISO:45001 for Occupational Safety Management.

  • Inline with Government guidance allergen information will be provided for all menu items consumed within ExCeL London

See Care Share

Our new ‘See Care Share’ programme shifts our outlook from reactive to proactive. Safety can sometimes be viewed as a technical process, reliant on documented procedures and processes, which are largely the responsibility of the safety team. The programme empowers our teams to challenge the status quo; progress from training to coaching on the job; execute tasks simply and lead by example, communicating on a personal level.

A stronger culture of safety encourages interdependence, meaning our people are genuinely invested in keeping themselves and others safe. We held one-day immersive sessions in order to encourage our senior leaders to:

  • Reflect on their leadership style, and their role in keeping their ‘work family’ safe.

  • Think about how they could be more present and authentic with their teams.

  • Develop and implement a personal safety plan that’s reviewed quarterly, with coaching to help with roll-out.

  • Share lessons learned from any safety incidents and recount these personally to make a human connection.

Key safety behaviours

  • Be Present
Always focus on the task in hand, by being alert to the hazards to yourself and others around you.

    Be Authentic
By being genuine and taking the time to acknowledge others, by asking how they are doing and if they have any safety or wellbeing concerns that you can support with.

    Step In
By taking actions when you spot hazards, unsafe acts or unsafe conditions, never walk by. Equally when you spot a positive safety outcome, reward it and share with others to help them improve.

  • It is caring for your team members and encouraging each other to work safely.

It is contributing to safety discussions, investigations and meetings.

It is sharing your safety knowledge, experiences and learnings with others.

  • It is being vigilant about hazards, your surroundings, team members and your fitness for work.

It is staying focussed on the task you are doing and looking for ways to improve the way it is done.

It is taking time to plan and focus on doing the tasksafely.

  • It is asking questions if you don't understand and stopping any unsafe behaviours by others.

It is reporting incidents, near-misses or hazards promptly.

It is expressing concerns or suggestions for improvement to your supervisor, manager or HSE team.

Our leaders reinforced the new mindset across the business by creating personal videos that told their safety story in an authentic way. As the programme has been rolled out across the business, our safety culture has matured, resulting in a natural drive to reduce risk and raise compliance across the operational delivery, not because someone else is telling them to, but because they care about each other.

Our Whistle-blowing Hotline facilitates the reporting of possible illegal, unethical, or improper conduct when the normal channels of communication have proven ineffective or difficult.
